Summary
Under the direction of the Marketing & Special Events Coordinator, the Part Time Naturalist is responsible for developing, leading, and implementing nature-based programming for the City of Kent Parks & Recreation Department. This position is a part-time position that can work, on average, up to 24 hours a week.
Responsibilities
· Develop and implement outdoor education programming for the public.
· Develop and lead interpretive programming throughout the year.
· Work with other City of Kent departments, environmental groups, and historical groups throughout the year to assist as needed.
· Develop interpretive materials to communicate the natural and cultural history of Kent.
· Create and implement nature-based programs for Kent Parks & Recreation Summer Camps.
· Partner with the Kent Historical Society to provide a historical walk along the Cuyahoga River for all third-grade classes in Kent.
· Communicate and partner with local schools to offer spring & fall programming, including nature walks and indoor presentations.
· Plan and implement the Cuyahoga River Days event for both students and the public.
· Provide weekly nature programs for our Lil’ Learners Preschool program.
· Assist with the Art in the Park event, specifically with the Young at Art station that leads hands-on crafts and activities.
· Other duties as assigned.
Education & Experience
· Prior experience in the field is preferred.
· If there is no work experience, applicants must be working towards a degree in Environmental Education, Interpretation, Environmental Science, or a related field.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
· Strong written and verbal communication skills.
· Ability to organize and prioritize workload.
· Ability to work flexible hours including weekends and evenings as necessary.
· An understanding of the benefits of nature programming.
· An understanding of the foundations of environmental science and related fields.
Working Conditions
The working environment involves exposure to conditions generally found in an office setting, frequent interaction and verbal communication with City staff and the general public. Primary functions require the use of office equipment, such as computer hardware and software applications, telephones, multifunctional devices, and other various electronics. Sufficient physical ability and mobility are needed to work in an office setting, including standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time; to occasionally stoop, bend, kneel, crouch, reach, and twist; to lift carry, push, and/or pull light to moderate amounts of weight; to operate office equipment requiring repetitive hand movements and fine motor skills; and to travel to other locations using modes of private and commercial transportation. May be required to work evening and/or weekend hours.
