Kent's New Flag
Kent's new flag was adopted on June 21, 2023 and features a burgee (swallowtail) shape, a central white eight-pointed star, and converging green and blue stripes that form the letter "K".
The flag was designed by Kent resident Zach Garster, with modifications by the Kent City Flag Committee. Its design and symbolism include several elements relevant to Kent's history and identity:
- The burgee (swallowtail) shape mirrors the Ohio state flag and Kent's former flag.
- The colors are blue, green, and white, with blue representing the Cuyahoga River, green signifying agriculture and Kent's "Tree City" status, and white symbolizing peace.
- The green vertical stripe and blue diagonal stripes create the letter "K". These converging stripes also form an eight-pointed star in the negative space, symbolizing the North Star and reflecting Kent's history of inclusion.
- The four stripes represent four periods in Kent's history: pre-settlement, settlement and canal, railroad, and the founding of the university.
